Some Cold Reframing
During deployment, I practiced a lot of cognitive reframing. It wasn’t easy, but it helped shift my negative thoughts to positive ones. For instance, there were many days when I took a brutally cold shower. Imagine being on a Navy vessel with cold water flowing from a cold pipe. It was freezing! However, in these moments, I thought, “Any shower is better than no shower” or “It’s over 100 degrees; a cold shower will be just what I need to cool me down.” It’s incredible how these little adjustments in thoughts can help you cope with challenging times and get you through the day.
